About
Del Corazon is located in the center of the Morrison Road neighborhood, an area with a strong latino influence that is currently transforming into a walkable neighborhood hub with latino restaurants and shops. The project converted two blighted (and very unsafe) trailer park into 197 units of safe and modern workforce housing.
Challenges: Initially the neighborhood’s transformation into a walkable destination was challenged by Morrison Road itself as traffic would routinely speed through the area and create a vehicular atmosphere that was unsafe for pedestrians. In order to promote an active pedestrian environment (and because the development is bisected by Morrison Road), we felt a median and Hawk signal would be an appropriate site feature in order to slow traffic and create a safe mid-block pedestrian crossing. Initially the City of Denver was extremely resistant, and it took significant political involvement to get the Hawk Signal and median approved.
