North Star-Sultan Mine

The San Juan Skyway is a 236 mile loop of the most beautiful scenery in all of Colorado. A designated “America’s Byway,” the road offers expansive views as it traverses several mountain passes, meanders past countless historic mines, and connects idyllic mountain towns where we’d all love to live.

Along the journey, just barely outside of the town of Silverton, at the base of Sultan Mountain and overlooking Mineral Creek are the remains of the old North Star-Sultan Mine. The mine seemed to be active in the late 1800s, and it was used to excavate lead, copper, gold, silver, and zinc.
